Learn how to utilize layer modes and styles in the quick and easy Beginner Photoshop Tutorial.

  1. Find a landscape photo of a city or country and a landscape photo of that cities or countries flag.

  2. Using the move tool drag the flag image onto the landscape. Stretch the flag to fit the size of the landscape photo.

  3. Once both photos are in one document (one on top of each other, flag on top) experiment with the LAYER MODES. Layer modes help to blend layers together. To experiment with layer modes: With the flag image ‘highlighted’ in the LAYER PANEL click on the word NORMAL at the top of the panel and scroll through your options.

  4. Choose the TEXT TOOL in the TOOLBAR and click inside your image where you would like the text to go. DO NOT DRAW A TEXTBOX. Type the name of the city or country in an appropriate font. Then look to the OPTION BAR (under the menu) to adjust the text size, look and alignment.

  5. If at any time you make a mistake or don’t like what you’ve done you can use CTRL Z to go back or locate the HISTORY panel and go back in your history.

  6. Once you are happy with the look and size of the word, click on the FX icon at the bottom of the LAYERS PANEL to add a LAYER STYLE to your text.

  7. Click on the first option BLENDING OPTIONS to bring up the LAYER STYLE dialogue box.  Clicking on the checkboxes will add those effects to your text.  Clicking on the word gives you options to adjust the effect. Add as many effects as you would like to make the text stand out.
